Batman: Transmedia Storytelling through a wiki

The DC Comics’ work, Batman, is one of the most famous comics around the world. It tells a story about the only son of Gotham City’s richest family, Bruce Wayne, who witnessed his parents killed by a criminal in his childhood. He vowed to eliminate evil in Gotham City and don’t let other children suffer his fate. He visited many teachers to master a variety of detective knowledge and combat skills. With the resources from Wayne industry, he created a large number of high-tech equipment and began his crusade. During the day, he is the brainless second rich generation and play boy in the eyes of others. However, at night, he is the Dark Knight who makes criminals fear and tremble.

Due to the Batman’s influence, it has tons of transmedia extensions such as television series and movies, video games, character Twitter accounts and a Batman wiki.

The Batman wiki is a collaborative encyclopedia for everything related to Batman. The wiki format allows anyone to create or edit any article so that a comprehensive database for Batman fans can be created. According to Henry Jenkins theory, “A process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience”. In my opinion, the Batman Wiki can perfectly provide this kind of experience. Thus, I want to put some effort into analyzing the Batman wiki.

The Batman wiki is narratively connected to Batman comics and movies by giving description to every character, background about the video games and movies, images of characters and screenshots from the movies and blog post by user of the wiki. The wiki acts like hypertext fiction because it gathers all kinds of information about the Batman story and connect them one to another. It is like a Batman digital Library. By clicking the links, buttons and images on the wiki page, viewers can get all the information they need (videos, blog posts, pictures, etc).

Batman fans always refer to the Batman wiki for information because they need to find out Migratory Cues. Weather Robin died or not? Did Bruce Wayne rebuild his house? Through searching information on the Batman wiki and discussing with other Batman fans, people can get a clear view of the story and they will be inspired to dig dipper.

Human beings like something which can give them pleasure for a long period of time. This is the reason why Film Sequels are loved so much by viewers. For example, the <The Fast and the Furious>, the <007>, this kind of good movies shoot a few sequels and still get welcomed. So we shouldn’t be surprised that the Batman, a super classic story is still maintaining Cultural Attraction and Activation all over the world. By describing a super hero fighting against the evil, the story can always attracts people’s attentions.

World War 2

World War II Wikipedia the free encyclopediaI am a big fan of world history, especially the period of World War 2. So I decided to spend some time analyzing this topic which I am familiar with in this blog post assignment. From reading the information of World War 2 on Wikipedia, I did not find any mistakes. This is the first time for me to use Wikipedia and the website leave a very good impression on me—the format of the website is so concise and the contents are sufficiently detailed.

According to Wikipedia, the World War 2 is a global war which lasted for six years (1939-1945). The beginning part of this war is some conflicts between Asian countries. After reading the content of this topic on the Wikipedia, I find out that this website has a huge amount of information. The contents of World War 2 on this website not only cover all the knowledge I have about World War 2, but also have many things which I didn’t know before. Such as the statistics of death during the period, the intention of some countries to take part in this war and the emergence of new weapons during the war, etc. As it shows in the following image, the article was first edited 13 years ago (November 10th, 2001), 7359 people took part in the edit. Up till now, the article has been edited 22,936 times, average time between edit is 0.2 days.

From these chart, I can conclude that this article is mainly constructed by those who have great interest in World War 2 such as historians and history students. There are thousands of citations in the article, this is what shocks me most. It makes me have an understanding of the real power of ‘collective intelligence’, because if someone wants to cite from thousands of sources, if will probably take half of his or her life to finish. I realize how crucial collective intelligence is in this internet era.

Henry Jenkins spend a few pages to write “What Wikipedia can Teach Us About New Media Literacies,” talking about collective intelligence, he defines collective intelligence as “the ability to pool knowledge and compare notes with others towards a common goal” ( Henry Jenkins, Part 2). In my point of view, Wikipedia is a place where collects and provide collective intelligence and a place which fully respect collective intelligence. Not only there are no limitations for the sources, people who see the website can also have a clear view of who contributed to a certain article. According to Henry “nobody knows everything, everyone knows something, and what any member knows is available to the group as a whole at a moment’s notice” I think this is the freedom and best use of knowledge.

Wechat is a free instant messaging application for smart phones which is launched by Tencent Holdings Ltd in January 21, 2011. By November 2013, registered user of Wechat has exceeded 6 billion. It is an application which has the most download records and users in the world. At the moment when Wechat emerged, a majority people considered this application is simply a substitute for QQ (a wonderful messaging application also deviced by Tencent Holdings Ltd 15 years ago). However, users of Wechat quickly observed the difference. QQ is a product of the PC era, and Wechat is specificly designed for mobile internet. The most typical characteristic of Wechat is that there is no ‘online’ concept because smart phones are always online. Wechat provides many new functions which QQ can’t provide such as online Wakie Talkie, sending current location and instant voice message, etc. (Gunning, p39) Everyone has the passion for quality, when people find out the brilliant quality of Wechat, they realized that it is the most amazing instant messaging application in the world. The number of users increased rapidly.

As I know, Tencent Holdings Ltd did not advertised much on Wechat. This application was merely promoted between QQ users. QQ users get reminder from Tencent Holdings Ltd. This manner is very useful, for example, when a QQ email user receive an email from anther user, there’s a small button in the email reminds the users that they can invite the other to chat on Wechat so they don’t need to check their email again and again to communicate. This kind of button also appears in the QQ application. However, the most effective advertisement is passing from mouth to mouth. As Wechat functions extremely useful, users cannot wait to recommend it to their friends and families. Wechat spreads like viruses.

Human beings are always interested in new technologies. (Gunning, p43)Apartment from the basic features which a normal instant messaging application has, Wechat has some amazing new features. It allows users to send instant audio and video messages and send their current locations to the other users. Users can use the online Wakie talkie talking to a group of friends. ‘Moments’ allows users to post some words and photos or some links to a place which can be seen by all the followers, followers can make comments to the other’s posts (the same as Instagram). Drift bottle allows users to chat with anonymous friends. ‘People Nearby’ allows users to know some new friends nearby. ‘Shake’ allows users to chat with someone who is shaking their phones at the same time. Etc. Tencent Holdings Ltd is still developing new functions to bring convenience for Wechat users such as using Wechat to call cabs and online shopping. In my opinion, high sense of responsibility is the reason why Tencent Holdings Ltd make such a successful product.

Different group of people have different opinions and understandings towards Wechat. As many students use Wechat in class, most teachers consider Wechat is a harmful for students. For teenagers who are still in the embryo stage of love, Wechat is a tool for them to understand the opposite sex because it provides vast amount of opportunities for boys and girls to chat. In most parents’ view, Wechat is a tool for their children to build their relationship with others. And in my view, it is an application which connects people closely to the outside world.

Wechat is,without doubt, an amazing epochal product. However, I think it is undergoing huge pressure. As we learn from the Tom Gunning(p39), every new technology eventually becomes old. In order to endure all the pressures, I think Tencent Holdings Ltd should continuously bring new technologies into Wechat. As the CEO of  Tencent Holdings Ltd said: no matter how strong you are in front of the mobile internet tide, a slightly mistake can make you capsize, so we should always respect the evolution of technology, cautiously perform all the duties and provide good service to users.
